Brief Hot Rod History
The first hot rods were older cars, commonly Fords, typically Model T’s, 1928–31 Model A’s, or 1932-34 Model B’s which were modified to reduce their weight. Typical modifications were removal of convertible tops, hoods, bumpers, windshields, and/or fenders; channeling the body; and modifying the engine by tuning and/or replacing with a more powerful motor. “Speedster” was a common name for the modified car. Wheels and tires were changed for improved traction and handling. “Hot rod” was sometimes a term used in the 1950s as a derogatory term for any car that did not fit into the mainstream. Hot rodders’ modifications were considered to improve the appearance as well, leading to show cars in the 1960s replicating these same modifications along with a distinctive paint job. Variations on the hot rod brought about the street rod and muscle cars in later years. All of these classic cars and antique cars can be modified using the very best in today’s technology to be pretty much limited only by your imagination.

Hot Rod Restoration In A Nutshell
||Mechanical & Performance
||Body & Paint
Hot Rod Concept
In this first phase, we go over what your vision is for your new hot rod. We go over body types, desired engine and performance preferences and other pertinent info from you to let us know exactly what you are looking for. We will make suggestions that will assist you in getting the best bang for the buck. Once these factors have been discussed and agreed upon, we go and find your car. The vast majority of the vehicles we find will need a good amount of restoration done to them, but that is why you came to us in the first place. However, if you already have a car or body that you would like us to restore, that is definitely an option as well.
Hot Rod Modification
The next phase is making a list of each modification scheduled to be done and implementing them to the chosen vehicle. Modifications in this phase would include stripping the body down, sanding, removing any rust and replacing any metal parts with new metal that is shaped and honed to the vehicle’s original style. Special care is taken in this phase to make sure everything is done correctly. This phase of the project would also include any chopping of the body based on the clients requests and desires for the look of the finished product.
The fabrication process involves getting the chosen body of the hot rod we are creating and looking over every inch of the body and frame. After inspection we repair and replace areas that have rotted out or are not up to spec. We try to keep as much of the original car as possible, but in the same instance, we want the car to be safe as well as look good. Using quality sheet metal, we patch panels to hand formed bodies. We can recreate panels, doors, floor pans and more. We can fabricate anything you want whether you have us design it, or it is your own original design. We can separate your car from all the rest with chopping the top, making front and rear spoilers, or other modifications. The trick is to make the car look as though it should have came from the factory that way.
One of the most popular upgrades to today’s hot rod enthusiast is dropping in an LS1 engine to maximize performance and horsepower. At Silverback Garage and Sales we are able to accommodate your wishes whether you want to keep the vehicle with its original setup or by utilizing one of the upgrade options we offer.
Other considerations would be a small block Chevy V-8 and engines from Ford and so on.
Interior customization and design
Customizing the interior of the car is a vital part to the restoration. Everything from seats, to carpet, to dashboard and knobs can all be customized. The options are pretty unlimited in this area of the build. We can customize the interior of your project from start to finish leaving you with a beautiful creation that is unique to your liking.
Modern Conveniences for Hot Rods
As you know A/C was unheard of in these older cars back in the 30’s and 40’s, however, you don’ have to suffer! Silverback Garage and Sales can install a custom A/C and heating unit in your hot rod and still keep it out of view to maintain the original look. Call or contact us to see what options we have for your next build.
Car suspension and how to will handle the road is another important part of your Houston hot rod build. We have numerous options dependent upon the vehicle you have chosen for us to build. We can customize your car to meet with your comfort standards as well.
Wheels and Tires
One of the final decisions made is what wheels and tires the client wants on the vehicle. We have numerous options to choose from. Classic chrome mag wheels are always a good choice, but with the rise in technology in today’s world, your choices are almost endless. Hot rod wheels come in many designs and sizes to fit your desire.
